A New Problem in Sports All over the country concussions are an up and coming problem in sports. A concussion occurs when the brain shakes in the skull from physical contact. In children alone, it is stated that 175,000 are treated in emergency rooms all over the nation (Costa). Properly teaching players the correct technique for the sport they play and a proper diagnosis could help this problem. During sports competitions a concussion can happen at any moment, concussions can happen unexpectedly at practices or just at a warm up before a game. Thirty-three percent of all sports concussions happen during practice, even the professionals that know what they are doing get hurt without meaning too (“Head Case - Complete Concussion Managements”). When receiving a blow to the head, an estimated forty-seven percent of athletes do not report feeling any symptoms of a concussion even if they have already had one (“Concussion Facts”). Athletes always need to take precaution even if they are certain that they are not hurt or injured. One of the main issues with concussions is that most people don’t know the symptoms of having one. Some symptoms of a concussion are not being able to think clearly or having a difficult time concentrating and remembering information (Brody). Playing contact sports such a football or boxing, can not only cause damage in present time, but in the future also. A lot of football players, after they have stopped playing, will start to have symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or Alzheimer's disease which mean there is long term damage in playing physical contact sports (“Do Sports Concussions Really Cause Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy”). Also, returning back to a sport that the player was playing to soon can cause higher risks of damaging the brain
