Condoleezza Rice
Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama to John Wesley Rice Jr. and Angelena Rice. Her father was a Presbyterian minister in Birmingham's Westminster Presbyterian Church, as well as a coach and a guidance counselor in a black public school. Her mother was a teacher and an avid opera lover, which explains why she named her only child after and Italian expression "con dolcezza" which means "with sweetness." Despite growing up in the segregated south, attending a segregated school her parents were determined that she would grow up a well-rounded accomplished woman. Her parents instilled in Condoleezza that she could do anything she wanted; she was exposed to music at the early age of three. She took Spanish and French lessons and was also involved in sports. The discipline her parents instilled in her paid off with her skipping both the first and seventh grade. In 1968 her family moved to Denver, Colorado

After she took a class taught by Josef Korbel, a refugee from Czechoslovakia, she began taking Russian history and language courses and became fascinated with Cold War politics. Rice graduated from the University of Denver in 1974, and she enrolled at the University of Norte Dame in Indiana. She earned a Master’s degree in government and international studies from the University of Norte Dame in 1975. At the suggestion of her former professor, Josef Korbel, Condoleezza returned to for her Ph.D. at the University of Denver which she earned by 1981. Soon after she was offered a fellowship at Stanford University to its Center for International Security and Arms Control, something no other woman had been offered before, she accepted. She was later hired at Stanford to teach political
