Mississippi’s flag is a hybrid of the “Stars and Bars” and the Confederate Battle Flag and remains the same today. Finally, Alabama’s discrete interpretation of the flag is the “St. Andrew's Cross” which is reflected by the Battle Flag with a white background, without the stars across it. Overall, the utilization of the flag by racist government officials with racist ideals, as well as the incorporation of the flag into the state flags of former Confederate states, communicates its racial symbolism through its connotations.

It stands for discrimination and oppression, specifically towards African-Americans. Though it originates from the ideals of States’ Rights, it has been tainted and strayed away from its original meaning. It has now conformed to symbolize what society has used and interpreted it to be. Why would you want to continue to use something that symbolises oppression of a fellow American citizen? Before purchasing and plastering the flag, think of what it means and how it could affect others around you. Americans have the privilege of freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. It is within our Constitutional Rights to own a Battle Flag. But unless it is in reverence to a lost Confederate soldier, why would you want to use a flag that is not moral and ethically inclined? As Confederate General Washington Lee stated after the end of the war, “I think it is wiser moreover not to keep open the sores of war.” The choice is up to you and your conscience, but rather it is the right choice or not is evident given the Battle Flag’s racist
