The Confederate flag has caused much dispute throughout our nation from – pro-flag rallies to occasional violent protests. Multiple schools local to the Emanuel AME Church have begun to ban the flag from being displayed and “more than 170 pro-flag rallies have been held across the country since the… shooting [occurred] in June” (Petersen). Many find themselves disagreeing over this flag which some believe is a symbol of our country’s development and history. However, others believe that the Confederate flag displays an inconsiderate and distracting message because of the era in which it waved. Amendment I of the Bill of Rights states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (us). Amendment I does not specifically state that all you say will be protected by the Bill of Rights, which U.S. citizens often find themselves arguing about. Banning the confederate flag allows for less distraction and less division amongst races. With the flag being displayed comes a large dispute and people taking a stand for what they believe. A lot of people find that it is distracting and some may even say it is disrespectful. Without the sight of the Confederate flag in schools, workplaces or even everyday life, people of color, that do not support the flag, may feel more respected and safe as a whole. Whether or not someone is offended by the Confederate flag is of no question, though as a society we must learn to understand the feelings of others when they disapprove of Confederate flag display.
