The Confederate Flag was adopted by the succeeding states during the civil war in the early 1800’s. It was first used at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis on March 4, 1861. Attempts were made to adopt it as the new American flag, but was ultimately rejected. This did not stop the search for a new American symbol. Ultimately a flag was chosen that had a red background crisscrossed by a blue X with 13 white stars. It was about 48 inches square shaped. It was first carried in battle in December of 1861 as the flag for the Northern Virginia Army.
It was mostly used in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War where the very first Confederate Flag was used in war. The flag at the time was mostly recognized as the symbol for the Ku Klux Klan

They had a hard time trying to decide between three official flags during the four year civil war. From all the flags being considered none of them

was chosen to be the battle flag. The very first flag was approved in
1861. The flag had seven stars on it and represented the seven breakaway states which were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. The seven white stars on the flag formed a circle. There was a problem with the three flags simply because they were not blowing the right way and wasn’t showing the stars on the flag. After a while they came to the conclusion to use the third flag as the National Flag of the confederacy effective in 1865. A symbol to maintain their southern culture and traditions had been agreed upon.
Controversy over the Flag
In 2015 the Charleston church shooting brought national attention to the confederate flag and what it represents.
