Our past mistakes guide us more than we know, but how can reminiscing stray off into glorifying? A recent nation-wide predicament has conflicted our government and the public, to answer a controversial question: Is the exhibition of Confederate Monuments acceptable in modern-day society? Our country has evolved throughout the years, yet we continue to uphold symbols of prejudice. Confederate Monuments are inappropriate, and should be dismantled due to their strong ties to slavery and hateful ideologies.

This predicament is not specific to the South, therefore “southern pride” doesn’t justify displaying offensive symbols in public settings that have proven to divide our country. Some states have already taken action in removing Confederate monuments (as depicted in the image to the left) include California, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas.(Suerth) Considering the previously stated territories vary from West, East, and South, removal of Confederate symbols should be a standard for the whole country. According to the Southern Poverty law Center, about nine confederate monuments have been removed throughout the country from April 2016 to August 2017.(Swanson) There should not be any locational bias when it comes to removing statues which embody hateful ideologies. Our country epitomizes diversity and can be considered “a melting pot of cultures,” therefore these monuments should be quashed considering their exemplification of values which we neither endorse or condone - including racism, white supremacy, and discrimination. We are Americans and the grounds upon which we stand withhold a rollercoaster of a past which is our duty to remember.
