Tension can be created when two people have different interests or perspectives that conflict with each other. In the stories “Confetti Girl” by Diana Lopez and “Tortilla Sun” by Jennifer Cervantes, the authors create a sense of tension through the conflict and different perspectives that they have with each other. In the story, “Confetti Girl” by Diana Lopez, the girl in the story has a problem with her dad in the fact that she thinks that he doesn’t care about her. “Nothing's more important than his books and vocabulary words. He might say I matter, but when he goes on a scavenger hunt for a book, I realize that I really don't,” (Lopez 26) This quote from the text displays how the girl believes that her father cares more about his interests than her. The father, however, wants to get along with his daughter by helping her and trying to make her happy. “‘Making dinner. Thought I'd give you a break… But I left it in my locker. I guess I can't do my homework.’ ‘Nonsense, I've got a copy somewhere. The ultimate conflict in “Tortilla Sun” is that a girl named Izzy finds her mother to be selfish because she is taking a trip to Costa Rica and is leaving Izzy with her Nana in New Mexico, despite the fact that Izzy’s mom thinks that going to going to Costa Rica and fishing her research, which will allow her to graduate, will allow their lives to change for the better and that Izzy staying with her grandmother would be a good opportunity for her.
