Since the world has existed inequality exists analogously and it is something that shall continue to exist. Therefore, conflict criminology is still extremely applicable to everyday situations and continues to be relevant. The fields of conflict and critical criminology view crime as a product of social conflict for example, the unequal treatment of people across social classes (i.e., the rich go unsanctioned while the poor are over sanctioned) (Cartwright, 2011). The emergence of conflict criminology was during a time of great change in history; bringing about the recognition of “oppressive relationships of class, age, gender, and ethnicity” sparking the need to fight for equality (Young, 2002/2011, p.354). Unequal treatment is one of the main reasons that people commit crime out of frustration. An extreme example of this is President Donald Trump and how due to his high position of power many of his crimes went unsanctioned despite admitting to them on television. A possible solution to this problem would be highly Marxist and involve breaking down establishments, allowing us to be free from unnecessary material needs and desires, thus demolishing the power that society and especially its political and economic sectors have to criminalize deviance (Young, 2002/2011). Critical criminology demolishes widely held beliefs is caused by a problem of the individual, making it still a relevant aspect in the field of criminology. Critical criminology attempts to make clear that at many times crime arises from necessity due to societal problems (i.e., economic deprivation and marginalization), critical criminology draws the line at making all criminals out to be Robin Hoods as not all crime’s fit the mould (Young, 2002/2011). Young (2002/2011) mentions that as society develops through the transformation of social structures new modes of inequality and oppression will develop.
