"The Storm," by Kate Chopin was written on July 19, 1898. Catherine (Kate) O’Flaherty was born in ST. Louis, Missouri on February 8, 1850. From 1855 to 1868 Kate attended the St, Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart where she was mentored by her mother, her grandmother, her great grandmother, and Sacred Heart nuns. Her father was killed in a railroad accident in 1855 and in 1863 her great grandmother passed away. "The Storm" takes place in the late nineteenth century at Friedheimer's store in Louisiana. Calixta, Bobinôt husband of Calixta and father of Bibi, Bibi four-year-old son of Calixta and Bobinôt, and Alcée Laballière are the characters in this story. After doing some research I found that there were other stories with Calixta and Alcée Laballière, I learned that Calixta and Alcée Laballière had always been attracted to each other long before either of them was married. Because they came from different social classes they could not marry, so naturally Calixta had married Bobinôt who was of the same social class as her and Alcée married to Clarisse. The conflict in "The Storm" is that Alcée appears during the storm and being alone with him can only spell disaster, and it does. Because Alcée and Calixta are reminded of the time in Assumption and then end up having sex.
