Have you ever been a rival with someone? Have you ever felt in love with someone but you just can’t be with them because of your social class? Well if so this will be the perfect book for you. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, really focuses on class conflict and forbidden love between the Greasers and Socs. Between the Greasers and the Socs there has always been conflict. Being in different social groups it makes it even harder for Cherry and Dally to really be themselves around each other. Throughout the story you can tell that Cherry and Dally have feelings for each other but they can never be together because of their social class. “I could fall in love with Dallas Winston, she said ” (46). They do not get along. Between each class there is some type of violence whether it’s physically or mentally. Each class has kinda been forced to not like the other. Since the Greasers don’t get along with the Socs, they get into a lot of fights with each other. “ ‘Hey, grease,” one said in an over friendly voice. We’re gonna do you a favor, greaser, we’re gonna cut all that long greasy hair off ‘ “(5). Anytime the Greasers meet there is some type of violence. The Socs enjoy picking on Johnny and Ponyboy because they're concerned the weakest links. Maybe its because of there look, age, and personality. As much as the book persuades you Ponyboy and Johnny are weak, that’s not the case. “I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy. Bob the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled and still ”(56). I choose this quote because it really focuses on the rival between the Greasers and Socs. But this doesn’t only happen in the book, it happens in real life to. Everyone has people they don’t like, which most of the time they then stereotype. But I feel that because I play sports, I automatically get judged that I’m good at everything related to sports. But that's not true, I’m good at the sports I focus my time and effort with it.
