Conformity And Individualism In Ayn Rand's Anthem

In the novel “Anthem” there were many major themes presented. Two of these themes being conformity and individualism. The quote I have chosen relates to these themes because it deals with the word “we” and how the characters have conformed to society by releasing their sense of individuality without question. Through this two-letter word the characters have conformed to society’s standard because the quote says they have all become one working unit who shall stay together as one forever. They have also gotten rid of their individuality because it says “There are no men but only the great WE” which indicates that if they were to refer to themselves as men each person would be considered a man when standing alone, which indicates individuality. This quote can relate to individuality because it is focusing on the group as a whole and how they refuse to become individuals since it is considered a sin. In the book individuals come together to create a large group who are all equal and by doing so they are giving up their individuality. They do this because they think it is better to fit in than to stand out and they are afraid of being perceived differently. In the book Equality dared to go against society’s preset image of how we must behave and look. I can relate because I have observed through my surroundings that people only want to fit in and rarely want to stand out, and that standing out is viewed negatively. I have also noticed that those who decide to go against society tend to be happier and embrace their true selves like Prometheus. I can connect this quote to my daily life because of how it perceives individualism and how the message it gives is very similar to our own society’s viewpoint on
