During the eighteenth and nineteenth century the Congress of Vienna and the Versailles peace process both took place with a similar goal in mind however, these treaties were done in tremendously different ways. The initial goals of both treaties were to suppress French and German aggressions, respectively. Both treaties ended up succeeding their goals but one for a much shorter amount of time than the other. To understand how they were similar yet different we need to be able to understand what both treaties did, how, and why. Before the Treaty of Versailles took place Europe held the Congress of Vienna. This Congress took place after the Napoleonic Wars during 1815. The purpose was to settle all outstanding territorial and political questions in Europe, following the defeat of Napoleon, to the satisfaction of the 4 major powers - Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia, otherwise known as the Quadruple Alliance. First of all, both of them wished for everlasting peace after the horrific wars that took place in Europe. However, they had different techniques to carry out their goal. For example, the Treaty of Versailles chose to punish and ignore Germany; whereas the representatives in the Treaty of Vienna decided to punish France then to restore their relations with France.
The decision in Vienna turned out to be a smarter one as it kept the peace for a lot longer time than the other treaty. In both treaties the representatives redrew the political map of Europe so that they could stabilize their continent after the atrocious wars. Another similarity was the defeated sides must pay for their defeat in terms of money and lands. From both France and, especially, Germany huge amounts of money were demanded for war indemnities. They had to sacrifice some of their lands in order to gratify the desires of the victorious
