Social media is not always negative. In fact, social media has a positive effect on society. When social media first serviced a lot of people thought it would destroy the human brain. However, it has helped society in more ways than one. In “Connectivity and Its Discontents”, by Sherry Turkle the author explains how she feels that social media is destroying the younger generation. Turkle gives examples about how the younger generation is much different from her generation and she blames social media for it. In “Mind Over Mass Media”, by Steven Pinker the author suggests how media can have a positive effect on thinking skills and life experiences. He proves that even though critics try and use science to press their research about media and the brain, their still wrong. In “Reality Is Broken”, by Jane McGonigal the author explains how people turn to video games and social media because they’re not getting the engagement from the world around them. McGonigal explains how video games and social media are filling in their lives because reality is not. However, social media does not have a positive impact on society. …show more content…
Communication is used daily, whether it is face-to-face or on a computer screen. Turkle explains how much more communication is being used through social media every day and less in person. The author believes “Online connections were first conceived as a substitute for face-to-face contact.” (page 190) People would still communicate even if social media wasn’t around, it’s just easier to use technology. Different ways to communicate has evolved more and more every year. The author explains “These young people are among the first to grow up with an expectation of continuous connection: always on, and always on them.”
