Hi, guys. My name is Hunyee McCollum and I’m a sophomore at Hamden Hall. Today, I‘ll be talking to you about the significance of the conquistadors presence in the Americas and how it has affected the rest of history. I hope you enjoy :)

So, first of all, I’ll start off with what a conquistador actually is. A conquistador by definition is a soldier and explorer of the Spanish Empire or the Portuguese Empire.

During the Age of Discovery conquistadors sailed beyond Europe to the Americas, Oceania, Africa and Asia, conquering territory and opening trade routes. They colonized much of the world for Spain and Portugal in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Men like Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Marco Polo, and the infamous Christopher Columbus explored the world in hopes of discovering new cultures and

As kids, we grew to love Columbus Day because we thought he was a noble explorer who found our country and got us a day off of school

Now I don’t mean to point fingers, but actually, he was a leader in the mass genocide of millions of Taino/ Arawak indians and pillaged the land from 1492 to 1502.

Born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, Christopher Columbus became a skilled sailor and explorer. In 1491, Christopher Columbus asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for financial support in order to sail to India in hopes of establishing a spice trade route from Asia to Europe.

So in 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue and three months later, landed on an island he believed was India. It was actually called Hispaniola, an island now known as the Dominican Republic/ Haiti

Upon arrival, Columbus encountered the Native tribe called Tainos. In his journal, he mentions that they brought gifts and traded anything Columbus and his men wanted. They never said no and were very trusting because Columbus was able to trick them into coming on the boat and make them do whatever he
