During the establishment of the United States government and Constitution in the late 1700s, our Founding Fathers widely disputed exactly how the nation should function. Before the Constitution was written, the Articles of Confederation consisted of rudimentary laws that held together the early thirteen colonies. The existence of the Articles thus was short-lived because of its lacking specificity with personal rights and the government’s responsibilities. Two opposing parties were subsequently formed due to the new Constitution that replaced the weak Articles of Confederation: the Federalists and Anti-Federalists.
