Consumerism In American Children In The 21st Century

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term consumerism as “a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods.” Correspondingly, the current culture in America is obsessed with the consumption of goods. Children will imitate the practices influenced by the society in which they are exposed. American children in the 21st century are being indoctrinated into consumerism through the reckless spending of their parents and guardians, a materialistic culture, and advertised laden entertainment. To begin, parents and guardians are teaching children that success and happiness come from the pursuit of material possessions while neglecting personal relationships and contributing to poor decision making skills in regard to finances. Moreover, culture in the United States is rooted in materialism and the idea that designer clothing, luxury cars, and mansions equate to achievement. Televisions are flooded with celebrities in all forms and fashions. Reality shows make up a large part of TV programming. Children think if they acquire the type of clothing or cars they see on TV they will be content. However, the fact that this lifestyle is unrealistic is not translated. Moral programming is lost in the shadow of materialism. Society believes they will be elite through acquiring goods and that greed is good (Hedges). Children are left believing that this lifestyle by purchasing popularity. However, this thought process can have negative effects. Psychological issues, poor moods, and relationships filled with unhappiness are greater amongst those whose goals are founded in acquisitions
