“Contents of The Dead Man’s Pocket” tells the life-altering story of how Tom Benecke’s life and death experience lead to the realization that the true meaning of life is self-happiness and spending time with his loved ones instead of work. It all starts with Tom spending months researching and collecting data of grocery store shoppers to create a presentation that will increase sales and put him higher on the list for future promotions. However, through doing this, he has sacrificed his time with his wife and his own time. On the night before his big presentation, Tom’s paper containing al his research is drawn out an open window and gets caught on the ledge outside. Over the next half hour, Tom attempts to retrieve the paper, and in the process, learns a valuable lesson about life. This has lead to him feeling guilty, but he still focuses all his energy into working. On the first page, last sentence of the first paragraph, Tom thinks “hot, no--- guilty conscience,” and yet, he proceeds to send his wife off by herself in order to have more time to work. This further proves that his main priority is his work instead of his wife and his personal happiness.
Also, when Tom’s paper containing all his research is unfortunately drawn out the window, he refuses to let it go; instead, he proceeds to endanger his life by crawling on a ledge 11 stories up just to retrieve to paper. On the second page, 9th paragraph, Tom straight up goes and gets his jacket and promptly crawls out the window. This level of dedication further proves where Tom’s priorities lie, which at this point in the story, is with his
