Across all settings of health care there is more of a demand of leadership from nurses. Health care reform has steered the nursing profession into looking for strong leadership that can collaborate with other health care professionals, to deliver high quality of care and to be able to hold each other accountable for their performance along with being able to communicate effectively. With this interprofessional style of leadership there needs to be a mutual respect and collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals. The scope of leadership that is presented in the Institute of Medicine is that there are many opportunities for nurses to both lead in health care and to shape their careers for the future. The idea is for nurses to deliver care based on knowledge, skills and training. Leadership begins with an improved education system that provides for a more relevant knowledge and practice opportunities to be skilled within the nursing profession. To be successful with is vision all nurses from students, to bedside and community nurses, to CNO’s and members of nursing organizations, to researchers must understand that their contributions to health care are essential to the delivery of high-quality patient focused care. The potential of collaboration of different health care professions helps with cooperation and coordination of better patient quality of care. This type of leadership style helps with better patient outcomes, fewer medication errors and higher patient satisfaction. Physicians, nurses and other health care professionals must hold each other accountable for improving quality and decreasing preventable adverse events.
