vBeowulf is an epic poem about a heroic man who travels towards a foreign land in search for the reward of purging the land from the evil that rests there. This story became a legend sang from bard to bard, eventually getting its song sang into the big screen. Though every time a book/game/poem that turns into a movie, Hollywood always has to put their own spin on it. The differences in the story are quite significant. The biggest difference between the movie and original poem are the plot lines. The main plot of the original poem, and most of the movie, is that Beowulf goes overseas to a foreign land to purge the evil that lurks there. Beowulf slays the monster, Grendel, and it’s mother. In the end, Beowulf dies heroically to a dragon back in his home kingdom. In the movie, the plot line takes a dramatic twist just to bring excitement and more interest to the story. In the poem, every monster was derived from Cain. Grendel attacked Herot from the chanting of the Christian belief. He also couldn’t assault Hrothgar’s throne because it was blessed and protected by God himself. In the movie, they portrayed Christianity as pathetic and unimportant. The character, Unfero, was the only character suggesting that they pray to another god (God) for aid and every person he suggested that to called him stupid or just did not give him attention to that. He was also the character that would hide and cower away from everything and anything. Not being brave and heroic to help save people, just hide and care for himself. The differences between the movie and the poem of Beowulf range from the whole entire plot line, to where and how monsters were made, to the whole overtone of religion and Christianity itself. In the end, they both are great stories of heroic triumph and defeat. One just altered by the ways of Hollywood
