Controversial Issues In South Park's Safe Space

South Park’s episode “Safe Space” illustrates the infamous issue of creating a safe environment. The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, are known for challenging controversial topics in America’s society. Creating safe spaces is a big issue in today’s society with the increased use of social media, but Stone and Parker have no shame in exploiting this issue. The episode “Safe Space” portrays the negative effects of publically shaming through social media and face-to-face interactions to show why a shameless America is needed.

“Safe Space” begins with Cartman in PC Principal’s office sad because “people called [him] names” on Twitter. Cartman was looking for people to be happy for him, but instead, Cartman received nasty comments making him feel ashamed of himself and his body. Determined to fix this, PC Principal has Butters delete negative comments from Cartman’s twitter so Cartman only sees the positive comments. This boosts Cartman’s self-perception and shows how much of an effect social media has on self-esteem. Steven Seagal also shares his story on being fat shamed on social media. Seagal posted a photo on social media and was called fat and nicknamed “Steven Seaboomboom”. These negative comments took a toll on Seagal and it is shown when Seagal hyperventilates as he is in front of the students talking. Both of these examples show the negative effects social media has on people as a whole, regardless of age. Demi Lovato also stands on the side of eliminating fat shaming on social media. In the commercial for a #shamlessAmerica, Demi Lovato says how fat shaming happens “all too often” and wants it to end so labeling can go away. This is what Stone and Parker are advocating; the end of
