In unit three, I learned many new information about the controversies in policing and the Eras of American Policing. The controversies in policing refer to officer involved in shootings and the lack of confidence in the police. There was a racial discrepancy in officer involved police shootings. According to the 2016 data from the Washington Post, “34% of the unarmed people killed were African American males, although they are only 6% of the population.” This data illustrates that there is a racial discrimination against other minority groups especially African Americans. Even though slavery ended a long time ago, there is still prejudice against African Americans due to the fact that they are often involve in crime acts, have poor education, and live in bad neighborhood. Based from the 2016 statistics from the Washington Post, “Adjusting for population, African Americans were three times more likely to be killed than Whites.” This …show more content…
During the Political Era, police corruption and brutality was extremely bad. In fact, the police mistreated the citizens with force and violence. This led to the Reform Era with the improvement of technology, the control of police organizations, and the restriction of discretion through regulations. Basically, the police organization is improved with more education, better training, and more specialized units. In fact, the improvement of technology also has significant impact the police. For example, the use of police car disconnects the police with the citizens where face-to-face encounter is limited. Moreover, the brutality in the police unit for the protests of the Vietnam War and the Civil Right Movements led to the Community Era, a period of good interaction between the police officers and the citizens to prevent crime.
