Analysis of Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice, a novel of controversy for over two hundred years within its readers. Elizabeth and Darcy have been demonstrated in hundreds of shows throughout the ages, a strong heroine who uses her mind and sharp tongue, and a man who is quick to judge who every woman wants and every man wants to be. The controversy behind Pride and Prejudice has been discussed since the first copy of the novel, mainly concerning the role of women and social class importance of the time period. The essays that I’ve analyzed have discussed the growth of Darcy and Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s vulnerability, and concerning the role of women with their innate desire to marry into a higher social class. Shame, Pride, and Prejudice: Jane Austen's Psychological Sophistication) Hirsch emphasized the underlying reason why Elizabeth was prejudice, it was Elizabeth’s defense for falling in love with someone, Darcy. When Elizabeth realized realized that she was falling in love with Darcy, it had wounded her in a way that made her vulnerable by damaging her own pride. “Although she once took satisfaction from her pride, it is now seen to be a response to threats to her self-esteem, a defense against feelings of inferiority, vulnerability and shame” (Hirsch. Shame, Pride, and Prejudice: Jane Austen's Psychological Sophistication”. Hirsch analyzed the reason why Elizabeth acted the way she did, it was a defense. Elizabeth was known for her quick mind and sharp tongue, Darcy realized this and was persistent in a way that he helped her more than anyone.
