As I am pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences, I am required to take Adulthood and Aging. We were asked to participate in a study that consisted of watching three videos, writing three blogs, taking a pre-survey, and a post-survey. All of the videos demonstrated biographies over individuals who displayed lives that were full of adventure, tragic obstacles, life lessons, and a series of life accomplishments. In our last video, “Conversations with Charlie Swartz”, we were exposed to a man’s life that showed us extreme courage, motivation, and determination. Charlie is a man who lived a life of great and beneficial longevity. Charlie Swartz is 95 years old in his documentary. He also lived as a Jewish man who grew up working for everything that he received and he did not settle for anything less. Charlie graduated second in his high school class and he went on to attend Brown University for his college degree. This was not easy for Mr. Swartz as he was denied admission because of his Religion, instead of giving up Charlie Swartz went to the Freshmen Dean’s office and pleaded his case. I actually know quite a few people in my life that have showed me what it means to have determination and heart. My grandmother and mother are two influential people in my life. They have been through a lot of obstacles in their lives, but they did not stop them for providing for their families nor reaching their goals. In the case of Charlie one of his biggest obstacles was the Great Depression. According to an article that I came across, older people that were caught in the economic dropped everything that they had and went to help the nation by going to the army.
