Coolie trade is defined as the immigration of Asian contract workers under force or deception in the 19th century. The first attempt of coolie trading in 1806 was completed by the British, under a contract, trading the Chinese’s work for food and housing. Signing up for work, many men were told fabricated stories further persuading them to sign a contract. By 1847, the gold rush in California brought the first Chinese coolies to America and in 1865 another group of coolies were transported to work on the transcontinental railroads and highways. Occurring soon after slavery was abolished in America, Chinese coolies were laborers in place of slaves. White laborers were fearful of losing the jobs to the Coolies as they worked exceptionally hard
