Federalism
Federalism is one of the basic principles. Federalism is the division of power among a central government and several regional governments. The idea of federalism came around in 1776 when America had just declared freedom from Britain. Federalism was put into action in America sometime between late 1787 and early 1788 when the framers of the Constitution chose it because they were worried about the government being too powerful(Crouse,3). The government had too much power by government power inevitably poses a threat to individual liberty, therefore the exercise of government must be restrained, and to divide government power to prevent abuse(Crouse,3). Each level of government is responsible for its job and making policies for their area of the job (Cooperative Federalism Definition, paragraph 1). This idea of federalism came around in 1930 (Clancy, paragraph 6). Cooperative government is defined by three elements: “National and state agencies typically undertake government functions jointly rather than exclusively. The nation and states routinely share power. Power is not concentrated at any government level or in any agency. The fragmentation of responsibilities gives people and groups access to many venues of influence”(Clancy, paragraph 6, boxes 1,2, and 3). Regulated federalism was around from 1963 to 1981 (The Stages of Federalism, paragraph 8). Regulated federalism would be for the country to get the states to do what they want because without money the states wouldn't be able to do anything and a lot of their money is coming from the national government. In this form of federalism the national government has responsibility for all aspects of service (Hoecker and Smith, paragraph 5).
New federalism is the national government giving states grants to resolve a social issue (What is New Federalism?, paragraph 1). This form of government came around in the 45 years ago in the Nixon era (Katz, paragraph 1). This system of government was made because of a new system of revenue between the country, states, and cities was needed (Katz, paragraph 3). This kind of federalism was supposed to be as Nixon stated “more money and less interference” and would be “not as a way of avoiding problems, but as a way of solving problems.” (Katz, paragraph 3).
