Kinetic Theory day 1 Make a copy of these notes for yourselves so that you can type directly on it :) There are also a lot of videos and and the class notes in
Moodle Day 1 of the unit. There are some key concepts and vocab that we need to understand in this unit. Let’s start with defining a few things: Go to this web site to learn about the difference between heat and temperature and this one to learn about kinetic and potential energy. After watching and reading the above material, answer these questions
1. What is Kinetic Energy?
Energy created as a result of motion or movement.
2. How does temperature affect kinetic energy?
Temperature is a number related to the average energy of the molecules in a substance
When the average energy of a molecule increases (rise in temperature) the speed of the molecules increases as well
Increase in temperature, kinetic energy gets faster
3. What is potential energy?
Potential energy is the stored energy based on the position of an object
4. What is meant by Temperature and how is it different than heat?
Temperature = number related to energy, but NOT the energy itself
Heat = actual energy measured in units (Joules)
5. What is vapor pressure
?
The pressure when the vapor is saturated. It is in a closed container until they're the same amount of molecules returning to the liquid as there leaving. Vapor pressure is
HIGH
for things that evaporate quickly.
6. What is meant by boiling point
?
The temperature where the saturated vapor pressure of a liquid is the same as the surrounding pressure.
7. How do intermolecular forces affect boiling point? Use the picture below to explain why water has a higher boiling point than pentane.
Intermolecular forces affect boiling point because they repel and attract molecules which affects the vapor pressure. The vapor pressure than has effects on the boiling
