Coraline

In the Novella Coraline written by Neil Gaiman the themes of fear and courage are evident throughout. Throughout this essay I will discuss the importance of both themes and how they are visible throughout the story of Coraline. In the story of Coraline the theme of courage is visible throughout Coraline's undertaking from world to world, as shown when Coraline goes through the door the second time along with when her Dad goes back into the field with the wasps: ‘It wasn't brave because he wasn't afraid; it was the only thing he could do. But going back again to get his glasses, when he knew the wasps were there, when he was really afraid. That was brave."-Coraline. The reason why this quote is meaningful to the story of Coraline is due to, even though the father was afraid he still went and got his glasses. Coraline was being brave when she offered her existence to "Beldam" to rescue her parents. That was bravery, but also selflessness offering her life for another's.
Therefore, the theme of Courage is evident throughout the whole story Of Coraline. Showed by her offering her life for the sake of others this is being selfless and courageous. In the tale of Coraline, the theme of Fear is also shown throughout Coraline's story when Coraline had the fear of not finding her parents or when the other mother threw her into the mirror: “Coraline hesitated. She turned back. Her other mother and her other father were walking towards her, hancienting hands. They were looking at her with their black button eyes. ” (4. 128) This quote represents fear, showing Coraline's fear of their button eyes, she was afraid and she fled from them. That was Coraline being
