“There’s an old saying: You learn, you earn, and then you return,” said longtime friend of Corey, Joe Zirnk, “Most people get the first two and they never figure out the third part. Corey picked that up at a young age and ran with it. He gave from the heart.” Corey Griffin inspired millions of people to participate in the fun challenge, the ALS ice bucket challenge. Corey is the most effective citizen of the 20th century. Growing up Corey lived in Alabama all his life. He was the oldest child out of three. He had a younger sister and brother. Then Corey went to college and moved north to Boston College in 2014 and played hockey there. His parents always tried to teach him to be an great person in this hectic word, and it worked. His fundraiser, the ALS ice bucket challenge, started out small, but later the challenge sky rocketed. ALS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often heard to be called "Lou Gehrig's Disease." He inspired them to raise awareness and funds for ALS. Pete Frates, was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease. Neurodegenerative disease is when the neurons (nerve cells) start dying and not having a function. Pete was a very big inspiration to Corey. As of August 29, the ALS Association received 100.9 million dollars in donations compared to 2.8 million dollars during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 29). That is 98.1 million dollars more than last year.
