In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque provides an in-depth description of many characters. One of the more important characters is Corporal Himmelstoss. He is significant for a number of reasons, but a large reason is for his cruelty to his soldiers. He forced his Kropp and Paul to “[clear] the barrack-square of snow with a hand-broom and a dust-pan” which took a long amount of time (Remarque 23). Himmelstoss forced them to these chores because Himmelstoss did not like them for no apparent reason. He was also important due to the fact that he displayed the transformation from man to beast. Himmelstoss starts out as “a postman”, but evolved into the “strictest disciplinarian in the camp” after his twelve years of service (Remarque 23).
