William Golding’s “Lord of Flies” on its cover is a classic story of Good vs. Evil but withholds a deeper story. Human nature and its susceptibility to corruption. The protagonist, Ralph, and the Antagonist, Jack, both start the story with the same mindset. To survive and get rescued. However, their mindsets slowly drift apart as Jack wishes to be the leader of the boys’ new civilization and human nature drives him to obsession with hunting which begins his corruption. Using the coincidental fear of “the beast”, Jack is soon able to use the fear of the beast to drive other boys to corruption and take the leadership role. The main characters all represent a greater motif as well as the two most important items in the story, the Lord of Flies and the Conch Shell. Jack the main character represents order because as “normal” human who can reason to overcome the corruption the fear of the beast’s issues into its victims. Piggy represents logical thinking. His actions suggest that he cannot even comprehend how or why corruption has spread to the fellow boys. Piggy is one of the characters that contributes to order but its disposed of. Jack represents corruption and the

human natures susceptibility to it. Jack is quick to use the boys fear to ensue his own ideas and almost becomes a sort of tyrant over the other boys. Simon is an awkward character in that he represents a character that does not have the ability to become corrupt. His early encounter with the Lord of Flies has the Lord of Flies “tell” Simon that he cannot escape it and that he will have some “fun” Simon later. This “fun” foreshadows his death to the blood craved boys of Jack’s tribe. Simon is also the only boy to suggest that the beast is within them and everyone has the capacity to become corrupt
