The news of the "New World" was a big opportunity for conquest in several European nations. Cortes heard the news and was immediately interested. He eventually gathered men, ships, and other supplies to go on the voyage. Cortes left Spain to the Americas with little information of what to expect. While he knew he would run into native people, he did not know whether they were going to be hostile.
The Aztecs lived a frightful, and warlike culture. They believed in this "sun god" that would raise the sun into the sky each day if appeased by daily human sacrifice. Usually the Aztecs would sacrifice slaves and captives but even their own people if necessary. Their government ran on several city states in which Montezuma didn't completely rule

His goal was to rule over the "New World". He especially had an interest in Mexico, he saw a chance to gain wealth and convert several natives to the Roman Catholic faith. Even though he had almost no idea of what to expect, he still took the risk.

Although the Aztecs seemed to have the upper hand over the Spanish conquistadors in their numbers, the conquistadors still had several other advantages over the Aztecs too. Cortes had the most cutting-edge equipment available. Cannons were an advantage for the conquistadors. They also had horses, dogs, and muskets.
Even with the Aztec's numbers, somehow the Spanish Conquistadors still won the war. Tenochtitlan was destroyed, built upon, and renamed New Spain. Cortes became its new emperor. The Native Americans intermarried with the Spanish and other Europeans creating a whole new culture called the mestizos.
It is amazing how the Spanish Conquistadors realized what they were up against and figured out what they needed to do. Somehow, they came up with a plan to defeat the Aztecs and succeeded. The Spanish war strategies were way more effective than the Aztecs. Their methods were extremely more technologically advanced than the Aztecs
