Society portrays a father and son relationship being so cliche and perfect but the book Fences breaks the rules of society and shows us the total opposite. Not being able to connect with one parent can lead to self doubt and lack of self identity. Cory Maxson is a teenage boy who learns how to find the good in someone who has put them through difficult challenges. When we love someone we want to know what they think of us or in other words we want to know how they feel towards us. Cory was very solicitous towards his father. He demonstrated concern of what Troy Maxson, his father, thought about him. In Fences, page 37, Cory asks his father, “How come you never liked me?”.
