A man convicted of murder is sentenced to life in prison where he is always provided three meals a day, bathroom facilities, and a comfortable sleeping arrangement for free. In comparison, an elderly man who has committed no crime, but is simply unable to take care of himself any longer, sits in a small room, with a sub-par meal for dinner while he anxiously anticipates the next day when he would finally be able to shower. In the modern world, the funding for people living in nursing homes is approximately six times less than the funding provided for prisons. However, these are not the only problems that face nursing homes, as the services they provide are immensely expensive. Usually residents and their families expect certain conveniences to be included with the total cost for their stay. However, research has shown that most nursing facilities require additional payment for personal items such as telephone, personal clothing, or cosmetics and grooming products (Day). Furthermore, according to Costs of Care, a nursing facility’s “all inclusive” fees do not pay for residents who wish to participate in activities outside of those routinely provided to all others living in the home. Although it is easy to blame the workers in an assisted living service, nurses and aids are not to blame for the high expenses that come with happier living. Prices for services in nursing homes are decided upon by the government, and they made these prices high. The average cost for services in an adult day health care center is sixty-seven dollars per citizen. If a _____ wishes to occupy a one bedroom unit in an assisted living facility, the price will skyrocket to $3,293 per month. Similarly, the average cost per day for a semi-private room in a nursing home is $205 per day: which equates to $6,235 per month. A private room is around an additional $700 each month.
