When people are talking about country music and rap music many people don’t associate them being alike, but in reality many of the thing the sing about are related in some way. Country music has been around a lot longer than rap. Country music started back in the 1920’s but didn’t become popular until the 1940’s when it was referred to as “hillbilly music”. On the other hand rap music didn’t become popular until the 1990’s to the early 2000’s. Even though these two genres have two completely different backgrounds they can be related in many different ways especially in the reasons they write their songs, the lyrics in the songs and the cultural affect the two genres have. If you listen to country and rap music you will quickly realize that the majority of the songs are sung about the same things. While rap artist sing about different types of drugs or how someone they know was raped or shot. Many country songs are about drinking in a bar or about how a girl they loved just broke up with them. Rap can have a very negative influence on the culture in a society. The use of the saying “fuck the police” exploded in the U.S. during the 1980s, almost exclusively because of the rise of rap artists like N.W.A (Goldstein). Although it has not been proven yet, kids who listen to rap music are more likely to have alcohol problems or be arrested at a young age. Country music on the other hand has not had as big of impact on the society even though 2 in 5 people ages 18-54 in America say they are “country” music fans. Most of these fans are Caucasian more often female than male in less populated areas of the U.S. These people are not as likely to be as outgoing as the younger generation that listens to rap music, but can relate more to what he country singers are singing
