Courage brings a new strength Integration was an important event in American history during a time where segregation was very common in the 1940s and 50s. When Integration was at its beginning for America not many people were all for having white students with black students. In the book, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, The main character Melba is one of ten going into an all-white school as the start of the integration program. They face many hardships going through high school as the first African Americans. While others at school are going against her, Melba learns to have courage through hardship by restraining herself from fighting back.
Melba shows courage by not retaliating back when she is discriminated by people.

“Thank for the compliment,” I said, looking at him with a pleasantest expression I could muster so he wouldn’t believe I was annoyed”(181). Melba is annoyed and feels less human when people were calling her names. She was able to prevent her anger from coming out and stop arguing with the man keeping the situation under control. In a way, It puts her above the man who is trying to make her feel less than human because it takes a petty person to even try to make someone feel like trash.Melba also didn’t reciprocate when she got attacked, dehumanized. This shows that she was able to control herself and not reciprocate with another attack ultimately going back and forth until one would meet a fatal end from the other. Her having self-control, she's able to maintain herself and not making the situation worse.
Melba learns to have courage through hardship by not retaliating back towards people who discriminate her. Melba had courage by holding back remarks and fighting back. Through hardship, Melba learned that true strength can be found through having courage. She inspires other people to be Courageous and to keep driving through life even when tough adversity comes upon people’s
