Courageous Actions
Anthem, a book written by the author Ayn Rand, is created for more of a younger audience. By the informal method in which it is written, the content is challenging for any reader. Individualism never existed in the society of Anthem because the council and scholars would not allow it. Referring to the word “we” helps with having the group feel; everyone acting as one. With having no individualism in the society, it is complicated to find themselves. Author, Ayn Rand, was born in Russia in 1905. In Russia, Ayn Rand lived a very strict life and it was hard for her herself to find who she really was. Until she moved to the states and encountered more freedoms. In her writing, Rand expresses herself through different characters relating to her past. Equality, the main character of Anthem, is unique; he is curious about the past and wants to find out more. Everyone makes mistakes, so there is no room for judgement. Equality runs away from the Home of Sweepers, which was the job he was assigned, to the Uncharted Forest where no one is allowed in and Liberty decides to follow. The forest is banned from all citizens. The Uncharted Forest has a symbolic feel to it because of the individualism Liberty and Equality find while entering. This experience lead them to a house which they infer is from the “Unmentionable Times”. As they enter that house they find an overabundance of books filled with information about the past Equality has been eager to find out.
