Native American trickster-god. The story Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore is about a boy named Samson Hunts Alone who left his tribe at the age of fifteen because he killed a police officer. Fast forward he is now Samuel Hunter living in Santa Barbra, California and works for an insurance agency. His adventure continues from there where he meets a woman and is overwhelmed with desire for her. Along with Coyote, who is an ancient Native American God who causes chaos in Sam’s life. Since leaving the Crows Sam has lived in constant fear that one day he will be found out and be exposed as a con. Coyote see’s all of Sam’s money and gambles it away, even Sam’s car. There they gather with Calliope and go to South Dakota to rescue her son, who was kidnapped by her ex-husband. Calliope is killed and Sam does everything he can to bring her back. He goes to the underground to bring her back but her soul cannot leave the dead. In the end Coyote gives his life for Calliopes.
In the book Old Man Coyote, plays the role of being a trickster. He is a god of many faces and is alive and well. Throughout the book Coyote does not take himself seriously and causes trouble for Sam. He interfered with Sam’s business and destroyed the townhouse that Sam owns. He tears apart Sam’s “white life” that he worked so hard to build and brings him to light with his culture. The most important thing that Coyote did for Sam had to be when he threw the knife at Calliope car tire.
Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore is a great read. It is a spiritual book about helping find your self. It’s about helping you connect to your own culture and finding out about things you never knew. It makes you asks questions about yourself and the people around you. It makes you want to jump and do something daring. It makes you sit down and think. Think about what is going to happen in the future, you think about myths and gods or you just sit down and think about nothing at
