Art, History, and Perception in Cradle Will Rock All the art displayed within Cradle Will Rock is a reflection of history and expressionism. Every character within this film sees, and therefore uses, art in a different manner. There are three main types of art depicted within this metafilm: paintings, live performances, and how art relates to business practices. For paintings, there is an abundance of underlying messages. Rivera's mural attacks war, the government, and modern thinking; however, Leonardo da Vinci's artwork is being debased and used to help fund a dictator. On the other hand, live performances only take place in two forms, the play, Cradle Will Rock, and the vaudeville ventriloquist's act. At the heart of all this art lies business. Business has an extraordinarily strong influence in regards to the art being produced and traded. Between the WPA, Rockefeller, Mathers, and Congress, art is corrupted, destroyed, and misused. Though the WPA, and under them the Federal Theater, had good intentions, they neglected several areas of creativity in their focus on acting professionals. Unfortunately, his superiors think that his "art" is un-American and radical. However, Mr. Crickshaw is unable to take a side when it comes to communism versus capitalism. He helps WPA clerk Hazel Huffman to combat against communism in the Federal Theater, even going so far as to prepare her for testifying against communism in court. On the other hand, after Crickshaw and Huffman have a falling out towards the end of the film, he changes his act to mock communism, and his dummy sings The Internationale.
