The Urge to Crave
The typical connotation of craving is to desire a certain food to the point where you dwell on the food until you receive it. Yet, craving is basically the desire for a physical object such as a vehicle, or a new phone; or a physical need like food and water. People also tend to desire an emotional need such as love. In the novels and articles we have read, all of the people or children crave a different need or want. They crave the more simplistic, abstract and symbolic things. Craving is more than simplistic desire for concrete, tangible wants; in fact, abstract emotional reactions as well as the combination of the two aforementioned components finalize the complexity of the word. They all craved good judgement, financial stability and reliable relationships. “In India arranged marriages are practiced than other types of marriages. Family members, especially parents are much concerned with the individuals being married. Parents choose a partner of their son or daughter. They have to go through a long process in finding the suitable marriage partner for their son and daughter. They consider the person’s personality, color, character, education, social class, and many more things; they try to find out a suitable person from the same culture also. Personal choice is also a part of if arranging a marriage. The bride and groom can meet shortly before marriage. There is also matchmaking process in India to find out match able person” (Nanda 1). They relied on their parents decision to create a stable relationship and marriage, because they believed that their parents intentions and judgment would be more accurate and reliable than their own. In the text, it states, “This is why I must let my parents choose a boy for me. My marriage is too important to be arranged by such an inexperienced person as myself. In such matters, it is better to have my parents’ guidance” (Nanda 2). In countries like America, it would be frowned upon if a parent were to decide their sons’ or daughters spouse. They’re all controversial topics that even people today still discuss and suffer through. Flavio and his family were deeply religious tenant farmers, who went through many difficult situations. People in these poorer countries are constantly faced with hardships. They crave food, money, better housing, and good health- necessities. In America, the majority of families and children at least have the bare necessities, but usually they are well off. In places like Catacumba, they barely even have food. Flavio and his family were struggling with starvation and illness, but couldn’t get any help from the one doctor there. They craved equality. The clinic wouldn’t help Flavio or his siblings because his father built a store near their place. Since he wouldn’t tear it down, they wouldn’t help him or his family. They crave familial love. When Flavio couldn’t get help he needed, he knew he was going to die. He says, “I’m not scared of death. It’s my brothers and sisters I worry about. What would they do?” (Flavio 5). He isn’t so worried about himself as he is his family. He wants that loving bond with his siblings. Craving familial love, equality and health are both concrete and abstract
