“What do you mean worse?” Bennett was already horrified, how could this be worse?
With tears in his eyes, he went on. “Everything that happened… it’s all my fault.” Before he could say another word, there was a knock on the door.
Bennett slowly walked into the kitchen and pulled back the curtain to look out into the dark. Cole was right behind her, but she rushed to the door and opened it before he could see who it was.
“Jake!” She practically jumped into his arms.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it for the funeral.” He stood there holding her in his arms. “I wanted to be here this morning, but I ended up having to stay longer at work.”
“Thank you for coming.” She was looking up into his eyes, when the sound of Cole clearing his throat caught

I have the next four days off.” Jake announced as he set a plate of homemade waffles and bacon in front of them both.
Her mom looked from Jake to her and smiled. “Okay then. Thanks Jake.”
“Yeah, thank you.” She smiled at him, grateful that he was turning out to be such a wonderful friend. She ate and occasionally joined in the breakfast conversation, while she thought about Cole. She wished he wouldn’t have left. She picked up her cell phone one more time. Still no messages.
As the day went on she found herself doing that more and more. Looking at her cell phone… willing it to ring. As frustration and fatigue set in around bedtime, she found herself in the den again. She was about to make herself a bed on the couch, when she noticed Jake with his blonde hair dripping from the shower, no shirt on. His sleep pants hung low on his slender hips. He really was the perfect guy. Except perfect was never right for her. Unfortunately, her heart was already attached to another. Someone a little more broken, a little more flawed.
“Do you want to watch a movie or something?” Jake asked while making his own spot to sleep on the other

If she and Cole have feelings for each other, then why did the guy leave? Maybe he wasn’t over his wife yet. What happened to his wife Melanie was a shame. Jake had known Melanie forever; his younger sister and Mel were friends starting all the way back in grade school. He smiled, laying there in the dark thinking of all the times he would play tricks on the two of them when they would have sleep overs. Yeah, Cole had something special when he had her. It was such a terrible tragedy the day she died. Not that he wanted to give up on himself and Bennett getting together someday, but there were worse guys for her to like that Cole.
He stuck his arm under the pillow to get more comfortable and he felt something. Grabbing a hold of it he pulled the folded piece of paper out and looked it over in the dark. It said Bennett on the front, He looked over to her on the other couch, he couldn’t tell if she was asleep or not.
“Bennett?” he whispered.
