BENJI GOES FISHING

Hi Mom, New Mom has a 150-gallon fish tank that sits in the family room on a stand against a wall, and I sat a long, long time on a table next to the tank and watch the fish swim. They all have pretty colors. I don’t know the names of the different fish, so I named the small one’s lunch and the big one’s supper.

Miss Kitty said, “Benji, New Mom got those fish for you, and as soon as you get up the nerve she expects you to catch some for your lunch. She told me she was disappointed you have not eaten any. She wonders why she even bothered to get them.”

“Is it true, Miss Kitty? I never heard her say I could go fishing.”

“Benji, it is because she is trying to teach you to make decisions for yourself.”

With four flippers, I’d be as fast as the fish.

The water looked as if it might be a hundred feet deep, so I was nervous. I saw a fish swim by bigger than the others were. His body had different colored stripes. He was long and had lots of meat on his bones, but he was no match for a hungry Bengal.

He was mean to the other fish. He nipped at their fins and chased them. He then swam to the end where it was not covered. “Great he’s alone, so I won’t have to cut him out of the herd.” I ran to the end of the tank and stuck my whole leg down into the water with claws extended. I took a mighty swipe at the fish with my paw. I missed, but the swipe shifted my weight and caused the plastic top to slide off the edge and into the tank, and I went under the water. I’m swimming; I hate swimming.

Going under the water scared me. I think I sank about seventy feet deep. The first of my nine lives flashed before me and started to fade to the next life before I could start the kitty paddle.
