Creon's Character In Sophocles Antigone

Family is important than authority. Antigone thinks this as she buries her brother Polynices who was supposed to be left on the steps as an example, and King Creon has ordered that anyone who touches him or attempts to bury him will be put to death. Antigone knows the consequences but she still decides to bury brother. She knows that she is a princess and is the fiance to Prince Haemon. Even after Creon trying to make a deal where he will kill the three guards and all she had to act like she was sick, but she couldn’t try and bury Polynices anymore. She says “ You must know that I’ll do it all over again”. This shows that she knows what her future had but she wanted to stay faithful to her brother and give him the proper burial. His strength is he still tries to save Antigone. He knows that she is family and tries to save her but she says that she’ll just keep doing it. So he chooses to enforce his rules. His weakness is that he doesn’t really want to be king. Antigone proves then when she says that Creon has changed, and that he was so weak that he couldn’t even stand up for something he didn’t want. Creon’s tragic flaw is likes his power. He put his nephew on the steps of the capitol to make an example instead of giving him a proper burial. They both can be related because of the themes. In the song Viva La Vida it states “Now the old king is dead long live the king”. This is related because after the death Oedipus his sons were to share the crown. Eteocles said since he was king he made the rules and wasn’t going to give the crown to Polynices. A war broke out between the boys. Both died and someone had to become king. Creon became king. The old kings were dead and a new king came up. Another way is “One minute I held the key, next the walls were closed on me”. This is another way because Creon held the key to his country but then everything started to go downhill. Last of all is when “and that was when I ruled the world” this is because he once ruled the world but everything went wrong including his death.
Antigone can be classified as a tragic hero. She can be classified as a tragic hero because of her stubbornness. Antigone goes through the story and throughout the whole thing she is stubborn. She doesn’t want to change her way of thinking for no one. She knows the consequences of her actions before she does anything. She goes against Creon's word and goes and buries her brother.
