The play “Antigone” says that a woman’s place in society is considered not as powerful as men in Greek society and society in general. Certain scenes in the play speak of the unfairness of women and how they are treated in an environment. Women are fearful of the misogyny and a possible death if they ever “disrespect” the opposite sex. Women are considered by society as ‘weak”.

Ismene explained as to why she considered women lower in society even though hypocritically she is a woman. In one of the passages in Antigone written by Sophocles, Ismene stated, “A monarch's will?--weak women, think of that, Not framed by nature to contend with men.” Ismene was saying that in society, women are not capable of doing the same duties as men. They both believed that women should be at a lower rank in society. Since Ismene was treated in such a way she was taught that these type of acts were considered normal. Ismene was persuaded to believe such horrific antics. An example of Ismene being persuaded as to believe that men should treat women in such a revolting way are in stanzas 63 through 68 it states, “Remember this too that the stronger rules;We must obey his orders, these or worse. Therefore I plead compulsion and entreat. The dead to pardon. I perforce obey. The powers that be. 'Tis foolishness, I ween, To overstep in aught the golden mean.” Ismene was saying that since herself and her sister, Antigone are female they lack the power to do certain acts that men are capable of
