Growing up in Nigeria, where over 250 languages are spoken, I was surrounded by people who spoke several languages. From a young age I have been fascinated by languages and the ways in which people communicate. After spending time in Andalusia to improve my Spanish I realised that differences in dialect, accent and the vernacular exist in every culture and this made me want to explore the Spanish language and culture at a deeper level.
The Hispanic culture has become more interesting to me in the past two years as I have begun to study works of the post Franco era, and through this study I have learnt about the history of Spain. ‘Cria Cuervos’, a Carlos Saura film (1976), released a year after Franco’s death, portrays a family living through Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy. The film’s use of symbolism criticised the regime and the fact that there was still censorship after his death made me question why there was still fear in a post Franco Spain. I decided to read ‘In Hiding’ a detailed account of the life of Manuel Cortes, a Socialist mayor in Andalusia, to understand the lives of targeted individuals during Franco’s dictatorship. My first placement, in the restaurant Drumstix, allowed me to learn the importance of effective business management. I worked in the offices of the restaurant and had the opportunity to work at the tills. This heightened my understanding of how communication plays a vital role in the running of a customer driven business. My enthusiasm led to me being placed in charge of Drumstix’s social media.
