Arthur Miller wrote of the 1692 Salem witch hunts in his 1953 play ‘The Crucible’. Written during the onset of McCarthyism also known as The Red Scare which saw mass hysteria over the perceived encroachment and infiltration of foreign communism into Capitalist, post war America. Analysing the play by adopting a critical historicism perspective, allows the reader to reflectively understand the events and experiences surrounding Miller’s composition of ‘The Crucible’.
