Before Socrates’ execution, Crito visits him in prison. Crito finds Socrates sleeping and is awestruck considering Socrates is facing death so how could he sleep so soundly. Upon Socrates awaking, Crito implores Socrates to escape is his impending doom. Socrates tells Crito escaping would be unjust. Crito begins his argument for escaping with a selfish argument. He states that it will be perceived by the Athenians that Socrates’ friends left him there to die. Crito furthers this argument claiming Socrates has plenty of friends with the ability to pay for his escape. Crito’s second argument is that Socrates was accused and sentenced unjustly. He claims that Socrates is acting unjustly by accepting this punishment, which is morally wrong.
