Arthur Miller's play, 'The Crucible', presents an array of lessons that remain relevant from Salem in 1692 to 1950s America. Both times are characterised by repression, overwhelming mass hysteria and the persecution and demonisation of the unknown. The all-consuming power that fear holds over individuals is represented in both the Salem Witch Trials and during the era of McCarthyism. This is followed by the belief that all human beings are flawed, as revealed by the injustices committed during both times, and finally, the failures in an authoritarian government.
