Brown strongly believed in the inhumanity and cruelty of slavery. Before the raid of 1859 the Dred Scott case declared that Dred Scott was not entitled to freedom because he cannot be classified as a citizen of the United States. This infuriated Brown who believed that slaves should be considered as people too. His main goal in the raid at Harpers Ferry was to free slaves from oppression and abuse. He intended to arm them with weapons from the arsenal to protect them from the injustices of society.
