CSD 452 Reflection

This semester I have learned a lot from being a student in CSD 452. I have gain knowledge and insight that pertains to many areas of my life. This class has impacted my life as a student, a future SLP, and as a citizen in the world. I can honestly say that this course has given me a since of reassurance about the field of speech pathology.
As a student taking this course I have started to see all of the material that I’ve learned from previous classes come into effect. It is one thing to know the definitions of the important concepts that is used in speech pathology, such as place and manner of articulation and phonological processes. However, it’s another thing to truly understand these concepts and how to apply them

The information that I learned from the articulation portion of this course has helped me to realize that as an SLP, when I assess patients it will be important for me to research and look up information that I don’t know or don’t have memorized. For example, a young boy may have recently moved from a different country and is having trouble with certain phonemes. In this scenario it will be a good idea for me to look up the average age that boy’s become intelligible in his native country with these sounds. This information can help determine if the child has a delay or not. I believe that when I become an SLP understanding the severity of preparation and research will be very beneficial when assessing and treating patients.
As a citizen in the world, one thing that I have really taken noticed to after being a student in this class is the large amount of dialect that is used in the African American community. When I travel to different areas in Virginia or visit family I hear many variations of speech. As a result of the dialect vs. disorder video from the first semester, I no longer label people as having speech disorders if they speak differently. Now I take in consideration what I touched based on in the previous paragraph, which includes factors such as culture and
