Around the world, cultural diversity can be seen everywhere. America, also known as the “land of opportunities”, is filled with people from all walks of life. As a nurse, it is particularly important to be aware of the different types of cultures and religions. Nurses care for various types of patients and need to be sensitive of their cultural and religious backgrounds. This helps providing efficient care to the patient, as well as teaching appropriate techniques to family members. A student nurse should also keep diverse practices in mind during their clinical rotations. We make an effort to go on a family vacation at least once every year. Starting each December during Christmas dinner, my mother and aunts plan the place most of the family is interested in going to. Then, each family member is expected to contribute a certain allowance each week until we are ready to book. This past June, we got the opportunity of spending a four day five night stay at the Venetian resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. From there, we went to California to visit Los Angeles and Hollywood. We took a lot of pictures and created new memories. On these annual family trips, the air is filled with laughter and glee. I am interested in what are some of the cultural backgrounds I will come across in my practice as a nurse. I am particularly interested in the Cape Verdean culture.Because I envision working at the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, I want to be conscious of the different ethnic groups my patients will be : mainly Cape Verdeans. A lot of Portuguese speaking people live in Brockton and I have to be mindful of that. I think it is appropriate to know the specific ethnic group you will see the most throughout your practice. For example, as a geriatric nurse, the elderly will be the age group you will caring for. Thus, your interest should be modified for your geriatric patients. I am sure learning more about the Cape Verdean culture can be beneficial for my future patients at
